ANOTHER FLOOD

The Boquet flooded again this year, beginning with heavy rains that started Friday, November 8, and ending in an officially declared state of emergency. By early Saturday morning, mobile home park residents in Elizabethtown were being evacuated and businesses along Water Street were inundated. Flooding in Elizabethtown was made worse by a debris jam on The Branch under the Route 9N bridge.

Fire department personnel and emergency crews worked non stop as road after road was closed, and evacuation plans were made for areas susceptible to flooding. State Route 9, south of New Russia sustained damage, and a lane in front of the Hand House in Elizabethtown slumped as streambank/roadbank stones were washed out from under the pavement.

Waters in the North Branch roared, due to heavier rainfall in the Jay/Chesterfield/Lewis areas. A bridge was washed out on Trout Pond Road; West Road was damaged in Willsboro; and two bridges were lost or damaged in Reber (the Valley Road bridge by the Methodist church, and the Spear Road bridge). Thanks to highway crews, most roads were cleared or re-graded, and opened again by Sunday.
