UPDATE ON LINCOLN POND

by Anita Deming

Results of last fall's release of the Eurasian milfoil-eating moth in Lincoln Pond represent very good news. The milfoil biomass is now half that of the control plot, and the milfoil's length has been reduced by a half. This is real exciting. In addition, there is a lot of evidence of moth feeding in the area adjacent to the release area. We are hopeful of another, larger release of the moth caterpillars in 2003.

In the meantime we are trying to lower the pan fish population of the pond by staging a fishing derby. The small pan fish are numerous, and they are probably eating many of the moth caterpillars. So, we are offering cash prizes to the person catching the most number of bluegills, pumpkinseed, and yellow perch. In order to keep the larger fish like bass in the pond so they can eat the little pan fish, we are asking fishermen to release any bass caught.
