Rock and Dirt

Albee Road in Essex

The end of this town road in Whallons Bay has been washed out several times due to drainage from fairly steep private roads continuing out toward Split Rock Point. For last year's washout, Essex was able to get Federal Emergency Management Act (FEMA) funds to fix the end of Albee Road. But, funds may not always be available and the problem needs solving.

Before private roads were built, run-off from these wooded hillsides was slight and a small brook carved a ravine down to Lake Champlain. When the private road was cut, a culvert was installed to accommodate the brook. Unfortunately, during spring snow melt and heavy rains private road run-off and ditch water coursed past the culvert and continued its downhill plunge to the town road. Albee Road was continually eroded and sediments entered the ravine and the lake.

Plans for Albee Road

Thanks to Highway Superintendent Jim Morgan, and to the private landowner for a good portion of project funds, a rock headwall has been installed downhill of the culvert, the steep portion of the private road has been re-graded and re-surfaced, and where possible road run-off has been turned out onto a stable wooded hillside.
